Tastee Ltd. has grown immensely since its inception in 1966. The company has shown a high level innovation and consistency that defies the odds of a manufacturer and a quick service restaurant. The company has not only increased the variety of patties (beef, curried chicken, jerk chicken and vegetable) it manufactures but has expanded its retail menu line to include three (3) types of fried chicken: spicy, original and barbeque. Tastee Ltd. also offers a Jamaican styled breakfast and lunch on its menu. Currently, the company has a large product line with over 100 items on its menu. Over the years, the business has grown to sell not just patties and coco breads but has now added chicken, sandwiches, Jamaican style cooked meals i.e. both breakfast and lunches, in addition to a line of pastry.
Today, the company has also evolved from being a regular quick service restaurant and now has multiple locations island-wide. Through the expansion of its business lines, the company now operates as concessionaires in schools, franchise locations, distributors, owns and operates 18 Tastee branches and one cafe.
Tastee Ltd. has also added a catering arm to its line of businesses, where they cater for large scale and small scale events. Today, the company has a large customer base that purchases the Tastee products for resale throughout Jamaica.
“I remember it vividly, we kept on trying to make a patty that was really good. When we baked it and put it out to our customers to test it, their comments always boiled down to it being really tasty”, Mr. Chang said as he noted that was how the name Tastee came about. Between the years of 1966 to 1968 Union Square became a hit spot as Jamaicans would travel from far and wide to indulge in the experience of consuming a Tastee Patty as they could not get enough of it. Within two years, the demand for the product grew and eventually the business had to relocate to Cross Roads, where the company now operates its corporate headquarters.
The story of Tastee is an enduring tale of modest beginnings and the tenacious pursuit of a dream, by a husband and wife who were determined in their hearts to build a foundation for their children. Vincent Chang arrived in Jamaica from Hong Kong at the age of 13 years old. Chang went on to stay with family in Clarendon, where he went to school before moving to Kingston. It was at the age of 20 that he began his career as a baker at the Hannah Town Bakery in Kingston. That was when Vincent Chang learned how to bake as he worked in the production department. During his tenure at the Hannah Town Bakery, Vincent Chang realised he had a passion for baking. As a result of this, he moved to further his education at the American Institute of Baking in Chicago, Illinois and graduated on June 19, 1964.
After completing school in Illinois, he made it his duty to further pursue his education in pastry making and went to Minneapolis to do a pastry making course at the William Hood Dunwoody Industrial Institute. He completed this course on May 26, 1965. Following the completion of these courses, Vincent went on to deepen his experience through working at the National Continental Bakery as Production Supervisor. In 1966 Vincent married Valerie Doreen Lue Shing and within that year they started Tastee Limited. In ensuing years, the marriage produced four (4) children: Robert, Lisa, Simone and Warren. Unfortunately, Warren passed away years ago.
